Using FastMail.FM with Netscape

What you need to know

Note 1: If you already know how to set up your client, and you already understand the information below, see this FAQ entry for the server information you need to set up your e-mail client. The Troubleshooting Issues section at the bottom of this page may be helpful if you have problems.

In order to use Netscape with FastMail.FM, you'll need to enter the following information:

Incoming/Outgoing Server Setup

  1. Launch Netscape Messenger, and select 'Mail Server Properties' from the 'Edit' menu

  2. At this point you can also configure Netscape so any messages you send are sent via FastMail.FM. To do this, enter 'mail.messagingengine.com' into the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP) server' in the red box and your FastMail.FM email address into the 'Outgoing mail server user name' text box. To continue setting up your IMAP connection, click the 'Add' button.

Note: Guest users do not have access to the 'mail.messagingengine.com' SMTP server. Member, Full and Enhanced users do have access to the 'mail.messagingengine.com' SMTP server, so the following does not apply. Guest users should instead set the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP) server' field to your ISP's SMTP server. You should be able to find this information in your ISP's documentation; we don't have the information, so please don't email us asking what it is.

  3. You'll be presented with the dialog box below. Fill in the 'Server Name' as 'mail.messagingengine.com', in the green box. Also fill in 'Server Type' and 'User Name' sections as below, using your FastMail.FM email address for 'User Name'. Ensure the 'Remember Password' checkbox is ticked so you don't have to enter your password every time you use Netscape. When done, click the 'IMAP' tab.

  4. To make sure Netscape uses the same trash folder model as FastMail.FM, make sure the 'Move it to the Trash folder' option is selected in the 'IMAP' tab. You can also select the 'Empty Trash on exit' option if you want to regularly clean your Trash folder when you close Netscape.

  5. Enter 'inbox' in the 'IMAP server directory' field in the 'Advanced' tab. Ensure the 'Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages' option is checked. When done, click 'OK'.

  6. Your IMAP setup is now complete. You should have four folders by default, your 'Inbox', 'Sent Items', 'Drafts' and 'Trash' folders. Here you can see that you can now use Netscape to access all your emails in your FastMail.FM account. You can read messages, and save downloads. You can move or copy messages, either between FastMail.FM folders, or between FastMail.FM and local folders on your home/work machine.
